چکیده

An algorithm for minimizing a sum of Euclidean Norms subject to linear equality constraints is described. The algorithm is based on a recently developed Newton barrier method for the unconstrained minimization of a sum of Euclidean norms (MSN). The linear equality constraints are handled using an exact L 1 penalty function which is made smooth in the same way as the Euclidean norms. It is shown that the dual problem is to maximize a linear objective function subject to homogeneous linear equality constraints and quadratic inequalities. Hence the suggested method also solves such problems eeciently. In fact such a problem from plastic collapse analysis motivated this work. Numerical results are presented for large sparse problems, demonstrating the extreme eeciency of the method.

A Primal-dual Algorithm for Minimizing a Non-convex Function Subject to Bound and Linear Equality Constraints

A new primal-dual algorithm is proposed for the minimization of non-convex objective functions subject to simple bounds and linear equality constraints. The method alternates between a classical primal-dual step and a Newton-like step in order to ensure descent on a suitable merit function. Convergence of a well-deened subsequence of iterates is proved from arbitrary starting points. Algorithmi...

A Smoothing Newton Method for Minimizing a Sum of Euclidean Norms

We consider the problem of minimizing a sum of Euclidean norms, f(x) = ∑m i=1 ‖bi− Ai x‖. This problem is a nonsmooth problem because f is not differentiable at a point x when one of the norms is zero. In this paper we present a smoothing Newton method for this problem by applying the smoothing Newton method proposed by Qi, Sun, and Zhou [Math. Programming, 87 (2000), pp. 1–35] directly to a sy...

An Efficient Algorithm for Minimizing a Sum of Euclidean Norms with Applications

In recent years rich theories on polynomial-time interior-point algorithms have been developed. These theories and algorithms can be applied to many nonlinear optimization problems to yield better complexity results for various applications. In this paper, the problem of minimizing a sum of Euclidean norms is studied. This problem is convex but not everywhere differentiable. By transforming the...

A New Method for Solving the Fully Interval Bilevel Linear Programming Problem with Equal Constraints

Most research on bilevel linear programming problem  is focused on its deterministic form, in which the coefficients and decision variables in the objective functions and constraints are assumed to be crisp. In fact, due to inaccurate information, it is difficult to know exactly values of coefficients that used to construct a bilevel model. The interval set theory is suitable for describing and...

VOLUME MINIMIZATION WITH DISPLACEMENT CONSTRAINTS IN TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION OF CONTINUUM STRUCTURES

In this paper, a displacement-constrained volume-minimizing topology optimization model is present for two-dimensional continuum problems. The new model is a generalization of the displacement-constrained volume-minimizing model developed by Yi and Sui [1] in which the displacement is constrained in the loading point. In the original model the displacement constraint was formulated as an equali...
